Veterans

Timely access to primary care, behavioral health, and substance use treatment for veterans in the Charleston Lowcountry.

Serving Those Who Served

Veterans in the Charleston area have access to the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, but appointment wait times and travel distance can create barriers — especially for veterans in outlying areas of the Lowcountry or those needing specialty behavioral health care. Hope Health Network provides community care options that complement VA services. Our leadership team has deep experience working within the VA healthcare system and understands both the strengths of VA care and the gaps that community providers can fill.

Whether you are an active-duty family member at Joint Base Charleston, a recently separated veteran, or a retiree navigating the transition from military to civilian healthcare, our network of four specialized practices provides timely, coordinated care.

Primary Care

Hope Medical Associates is often able to schedule appointments within a week for veterans needing a community care primary care provider. We work with VA community care referrals. Services include annual physicals, chronic disease management (diabetes, hypertension, COPD), lab work, specialist referrals, and ongoing preventive care. For veterans who have been waiting weeks for a VA primary care appointment, we offer a timely alternative.

Behavioral Health

Hope Behavioral Medicine provides psychiatric medication management and counseling for anxiety, depression, PTSD, and insomnia — conditions with high prevalence in the veteran population. Our licensed clinical social worker Karen Whitfield has extensive experience working with veterans and first responders. Telehealth is available statewide for veterans who cannot travel to our West Ashley office.

Substance Use Treatment

Hope Addiction Medicine provides medication-assisted treatment for opioid and alcohol use disorders. Some veterans prefer community-based substance use treatment for privacy reasons — our treatment is confidential, and federal regulations (42 CFR Part 2) provide additional protections that keep substance use treatment records separate from other medical records and VA records. We provide MAT with buprenorphine, Sublocade, and naltrexone (Vivitrol).

For Veteran Service Organizations

If you work with a veteran service organization, VA community care team, or military transition program and want to learn about referring veterans to Hope Health Network, call (843) 737-0312 and ask for our referral coordinator. We work with the Charleston County Veterans Affairs office, American Legion, VFW, Wounded Warrior Project, and veteran peer support specialists throughout the Lowcountry.
